Don’t you just love it when that happens … on the topic of marketing I’ve resigned to spend the next bit of time (6-12 months) working on marketing and I am a regular reader of Joel Spolsky’s writings and ramblings.

There is a Business of Software forum on Joel’s site that is invaluable and while browsing through some posts I came across this article by another great blogger/developer type, Eric Sink, entitled Marketing for Geeks.

Don’t you just love it when a plan comes together.

Marketing, marketing, marketing.

It is a key component to selling anything and I hate to say it it is something that I feel the least comfortable doing. Back when I was in school, those many moons ago, I treated the marketing courses I took as a joke. That might have been due to the instructor but realistically it was probably due to my own arrogance and ignorance about the subject. That has to be a new one, being arrogant and ignorant at the same time.

Looking at successful organizations, such as Apple and Microsoft, and they really are clear and focused on their marketing, which of course is separate and distinct from their sales.

As I think about it today and ponder what I was thinking back then, the only thing that comes to my mind is “Ignorance is bliss”, which I believe accurately describes my attitude at that time.

Fast forward to today and my eyes are wide open to the importance and critical nature of a strong marketing plan. As I spend more and more time on developing a marketing plan for MissingLink, I realize how pervasive marketing is in everything.

To that end I am spending more time trying to clarify my target customer and hopefully move towards what drives that person and how I can demonstrate to them how MissingLink can help with their pain.

I’ll keep posting my lessons learned and let you know what i come up with.
